DIGITAL MEDIA & COMMUNICATIONS

Why Choose This Pathway?

One of the great advantages of the British educational system are A-Levels (also known as GCE Advanced Levels). A-Levels provide students with the opportunity to specialise in the subjects of their choice before university.

This pathway offers learners the chance to develop an understanding and appreciation of the place of media in our everyday lives. The syllabus enables learners to take a hands-on approach to the subject.

What You’ll Experience

Through the coursework components - the Foundation Portfolio for AS Level and the Advanced Portfolio for A Level - learners create their own media products from planning through to execution. Learners also consider and analyse examples from existing media, examining production processes and technologies and the effects they achieve.

PROGRAMS

  • Media Studies

A-Level Media Studies introduces learners to the power of media in shaping the way we see the world. From streaming platforms and film to podcasts, advertising, and social media, students critically examine how messages are constructed, consumed, and challenged in modern society.

Students will explore media theory, representation, and the influence of institutions, learning how media reflects and reinforces social, cultural, and political values. They’ll also investigate issues such as gender, identity, and globalisation through real-world case studies.

Alongside analytical skills, learners develop hands-on experience by planning, producing, and evaluating their own media products—such as short films, magazine layouts, or digital campaigns—demonstrating their understanding of audience and purpose.

This subject suits students interested in journalism, film, design, marketing, or cultural analysis, and provides a strong foundation for further study or media-related careers.

  • English Language

A-Level English Literature fosters a deep appreciation for written texts across time. Students engage with a diverse range of literary works, from Shakespearean drama and Romantic poetry to 20th-century novels and contemporary voices, exploring how writers use language to express complex themes and challenge conventions.

The course encourages learners to interpret literature within historical, cultural, and philosophical contexts, while refining their analytical and comparative essay-writing skills. Key topics may include love, power, identity, conflict, and the human condition.

Students will study core set texts alongside wider reading, developing independent judgement and an ability to construct persuasive, evidence-based arguments.

Ideal for those passionate about reading, discussion, and critical thinking, this course prepares students for degrees in literature, law, history, education, and the humanities more broadly.

  • English Literature

A-Level English Language offers learners a fascinating insight into how language works—how it is shaped by society, how it evolves, and how we use it to influence, express, and connect.

The course covers key areas such as language acquisition, sociolects, dialects, gendered communication, and the relationship between language and power. Learners will analyse a range of written and spoken texts, from social media posts and transcripts to speeches and advertising.

Students will also develop skills in original writing and commentary, learning to produce clear, purposeful, and imaginative texts for specific audiences and contexts. Independent research projects enable them to explore linguistic topics of personal interest.

This subject suits learners with a curiosity for communication, linguistics, psychology, or education, and is excellent preparation for careers in publishing, teaching, speech therapy, law, and journalism.
